Jan 22, 2013 - Photo 2 Photograms

Ok - so here we go. Going to try to pull stuff together here in the blog for my Advanced Photo class. Aiming beyond powerpoint and trying new things.

Today's lesson -
Back into the darkroom...
Chemical mixing - in all reality - read the trays or the containers. Measure up and you are good to go. Developer, Stop Bath, Fixer, Rinse, Wash and Dry.

Enlarger Station Set Up...
Enlarger plugs into timer plugs into wall. Do you know these things??? Negative Carrier, Bellows, Focusing Ring, Lens, Aperture, Light Field

And now for the fun part! Photograms :)
You may have had a dry run with the Sun Prints that we created on Photo Fun Day in class. Remember the blue paper + tiny little junk box items + sunlight exposure + water developer = cool positive/negative image!

What is a photogram? Check it out on wikipedia.

One of the most famous photogram creators was Man Ray - who even renamed the photogram the "Rayograph" after himself. Check out some info on his work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Want to see some examples before you go start to play? Check out the google image search of photogram!

I know - right! Way to cool! Now - take some time and go create. Your task is to create a series of 3-5 images using the stuff you brought in from home. You can play with exposure times by using test strips. You need to think about subject placement and relationship and how timing could effect the appearance of objects which are translucent or transparent. You have 2 lab days to create.

Have fun! When you are done we will run a quick critique and you should post your image in a reply to the blog so we can all see what you created!

Looking for a new idea?

As we get ready to put our brains back into academic action, we need to focus our vision too! Need one last inspiration to photograph to get you in the mood? Pick a quote and illustrate it. There are lots of places to go for ideas - try online quote sites, a book you are reading, a post from your twitter or facebook, a quote you choose to live by, or just grab a book off the shelf and turn to a page. Drop your finger to the text and you are set!

I was looking through the current Memory Makers magazine and found this one -
"When the world wearies and society ceases to satisfy, there is always the garden." - Minnie Aumonier

I took my camera out front and got some great shots of my garden. Today's surprise are the surprise lilies that come up from nothing. They already produced leaves - didn't think they would come back as flowers until next year. Surprise! Keep your eyes open - there are surprises all around you!

Share your end of summer inspiration images. Post the quote and the image in a comment - or link us to your flickr account!
